Poem

The Better Journey

Michael Beck

There are many paths we can travel
The world beckons feet to explore
For the eye there is much to discover
To the mind there is offered much more

Is there yet a fair tree to not eat of?
Fruit we should keep off our plate?
Serpents still wait at our table
Dangling before us their bait

Like Eve we oft come to that moment
When bitter is packaged as sweet
The lust of the eyes we will walk in
If we do not pass up the treat

For us on the mount of temptation
Our Savior said “No” to it all
The world decked in all of its splendor
Could not cause our Master to fall

Quick were His spiritual senses
The danger He saw up ahead
Evil path He would not even enter
When before Him temptation was spread

The grace of our God brought salvation
In this world we can righteously live
We have not been set free from temptation
But to sin we are not bound to give

Our hand to our mouth needn’t journey
Our feet can be kept from each snare
Our eyes needn’t gorge on what’s evil
Our mind needn’t feast on false fare

If God would give us His full portion
His secrets to us would reveal
Behind us we must put the tempter
To the beauty of God only kneel
