Poem

Standing in the Gap

Michael Beck

I wait for you each passing day
For some small sign of change
I mourn the loss of who you were
And sigh you stay the same

I cry to God to somehow work
In places I can’t see
To break the hard, resistant heart
That thinks it now is “free”

No matter what my eyes behold
Or what my ears may hear
I cannot leave this place of prayer
For one I hold so dear

Lord, here I stand before Your face
In brokenness and pain
This one I love is far from You
But in my heart remains

Please my God, behold my tears
And hear my desperate cry
Work within this renegade
Although they now defy

Don’t give up! I beg of You!
Be patient, stay Your hand
In wrath, remember mercy
While in the gap, I stand.
