Poem

Gracious Eyes

Michael Beck

He looked beyond my vileness
He saw who I could be
He did not let my folly
Destroy His love toward me

When others saw me hopeless
And thought I’d never change
He stepped into the picture
And worked to rearrange

All that I made a mess of
All that I had become
Under His supervision
Is now by grace undone

And to the ones who knew me
And to their great surprise
The person they remembered
Is not before their eyes

No longer do they grimace
No longer walk away
The man that God has made me
Has gone from night to day

So help me Lord remember
The man I was at first
Who You did not give up on
When I was at my worst

Who looked beyond the ugly
My sin had caused to be
And saw the greater beauty
Your grace could make of me

And when I now am tempted
By what my eyes behold
To turn away disgusted
From those in devil’s mold

May I recall Your mercies
That looked on me with love
And saw the man I could be
When touched by God above
