Poem

Better Jewel

Michael Beck

What we wish and what we find
Are often of a different kind
We dream, we hope, and then behold
An emptiness that leaves us cold
The lie was spun which we received
That all would come if we believed
But life on earth however fair
To life above cannot compare
Falling short and fleeting fast
Describes this life not meant to last
Look away, set not your heart
On all that must with time depart
Find that place where joy’s complete
And pleasures never know retreat
A precious pearl belongs to those
Who prize it most, all else dispose
Let go of goods that are not best
For better jewel above the rest
