When God’s People DIsconnect

Michael Beck

“O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?” (Jeremiah 2:31)

God has so much to give us. Paul told the Athenians that He was not far from any one of us, but if we are to find Him, we must seek Him (Acts 17:27). God is available; but men don’t avail themselves of what He has to give, because they are their own “lords,” they think they handle life without Him.

It is understandable that God is not resorted to when He is an “unknown” God. But what about when He IS your God, and He HAS proven Himself to you. The Lord marvels that His people no longer come to Him because they think they’re doing fine without Him. He asks, “Have I failed you so badly, that you’ve given up depending upon Me?”

This not only happened with God’s first covenant people, but it can also happen in the church. The Laodicean church thought they were just fine without the intimate involvement of Jesus in their lives. They were rich and increased with goods and had need of nothing. But they were not as well off as they supposed.

Jesus stands at the door and He knocks. He wants access into our lives in order to bring us much needed help. But He comes to us as we come to Him. We draw near to Him and He draws near to us. He IS available, but we must value His involvement in our life. We hurt ourselves, and all those connected to us, when we disconnect ourselves from the Power and Wisdom of God. Don’t have a bad connection to a good God. Answer His knock.
