What Stands in Our Way?

Michael Beck

“And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.” (Mark 4:19)

To think that the life each of us has lived is the life God wanted for us is foolish. Only when we get to heaven will we learn what could have been. Our will can thwart God’s will. Those who serve mammon will not end up serving God. Our own passions and fears can prevent us from entering into the good land God had prepared for us.

Thorny ground does not allow the seed to properly grow. What could have been is not. We are told: “Sow not among thorns.” (Jer. 4:3) The thorns that inhibit the word and will of God from being realized in our life is not something external. They are the mastering cares, fears, and desires that keep us from obedience. They tell us we can’t, even when God tells us we can. They keep us small when God would enlarge us.

The ground of our heart can change; but we must be willing to examine ourselves. What is standing in our way of hearing clearly from God? Repent of the thorns which impede Him from having His way in your life. Hear from Him, not your own heart. Move freely to fulfill His plan.
