What Are You Getting Out of It?

Michael Beck

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:17,18)

What can’t you stand? The traffic? Your neighbors? The annoying habits of those you live with? It will soon be over. The day will come when you won’t be able to drive; you or your neighbors will move; your family member will be dead or gone and no longer a bother.

In the whole big scheme of things, all we pass through is “light affliction” and “but for a moment.” The bigger question is – what are we getting for our trouble? Are these things being worked together for good? Are we letting patience have her perfect work that we might be perfect, entire, and wanting nothing? Are we putting off the garments stained by sin and putting on the beautiful garments of Christ through it all?

Through the vexations of life our Lord doesn’t only want us to hold on, He wants us to grow up in Him. He is the Overcomer and He would train us to reign with Him. How will we rule in the world to come if we cannot rule our spirit now?

All that you presently are going through will be a fading memory in the eternity to come; but what you became as a result of it will be your reward forever. Look beyond the temporal to the eternal. Buy gold tried in the fire.
