Walking Together

Michael Beck

“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:2)

Being in unity with others who share our viewpoint is a pleasant thing. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Ps. 133:1) We gravitate toward those who are like-minded, and away from those who we disagree with. Who likes conflict?

Jesus spoke of the diametrical opposition between those who were “of the world” and those who were of Him. The one long for the utopian day when man’s kingdom will come; the other await the day when God’s kingdom will finally fill the earth. Right now, these two factions share the same earth, but are fundamentally incompatible with each other. Each long for the day when only their kind will remain on the earth.

For now, those who are of Christ, must be a light to the world that does not know Him. They must example what it means to be a citizen of God’s kingdom. God forbid they compromise and “walk together” with those who champion man’s autonomy and independence from God. While the world rages against God and cast off His cords, God’s people must praise Him and all the more gladly submit to His yoke. Hopefully, their witness can cause some in the world’s camp to defect.

Can two walk together except they are agreed? No. The light has no fellowship with the darkness. God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. Will we have true fellowship with Him? Then we will walk in the light as He is in the light. We will have fellowship with those who are also in the light. We will walk together in agreement with God and each other. We will be prepared for the kingdom that will soon be the only kingdom on the earth.
