True to Himself

Michael Beck

“But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.” (Jonah 4:1,20

Jonah had problems with who God was. He would rather God be less merciful. God revealed Himself to Moses by the Name: “I AM WHO I AM.” People continue having problems to this day with the God who has revealed Himself in scripture. They would twist scripture to suit their idea of who God should be. But He is the Lord and He changes not. (Mal. 3:6)

When we walk with the Lord, people will also take issue with who we are. They will want us to be more of this and less of that. They will speak evil of us because we don’t align with their ideas of how one should be. But there is only one responsibility we have – not to make others happy, not to be true to ourselves, but to be true to God and make Him happy. Don’t change for anyone but God.
