Today’s Assurance

Michael Beck

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)

When the Lord is our Shepherd we have this certainty: He will be with us in every dark valley of life. We do not have to fear what tomorrow may hold, even if the very worst scenario we can imagine plays itself out, He will be there to show us the way. He will lead us in paths of righteousness. He will be our Light and Salvation in the darkest of days.

There is no use in worrying about tomorrow. If Jesus is our Shepherd we will hear His voice in the hour we need to. We cannot have grace today for tomorrow’s concerns. Scripture does not say, “Tomorrow if you hear the voice of the Holy Spirit …” No, we are called to hear Today. We are to pray, “Give me this day my daily bread.”

Collect today’s manna. More will fall tomorrow. Don’t get out ahead of God in your mind. There are so many things that are simply unknowable in the present. But this one thing we need to be certain of: our Jesus is the same – yesterday, today, and forever. As He has been, He will always be – our faithful God and Friend, more than able to help us in whatever we must face.
