Think Right

Michael Beck

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

Obsession involves making something more important than it actually is. We can strain at a gnat. We can make a mountain out of a molehill. Our taking thought for some things is not going to change anything (i.e. “add one cubit to our stature.”) What we are doing though is wasting precious mental energy which could have been better spent elsewhere.

We need God’s help in ordering our thoughts. It is prudent to ask the Lord at all times: “Does this matter to You? Is it something You want me to be focused on; or is it a distraction, a waste of time?”

Can we afford to spends our days in vanity? Moses knew the fleeting nature of our time here on earth and prayed: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

The days are evil. They are filled with unexpected events which demand our attention. But when we have a choice on what to think upon, we need to make a wise choice. Some things are just not worth our meditation – they will consume us, depress us, deaden us.

Each of us is given the same amount of hours in the day. We will one day be held accountable for what we did with them. Redeem the time you are given. Love the Lord your God with all your mind. Let Him separate the chaff from the wheat when it comes to your thoughts. Give Him the time of your day.
