“A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!” (Proverbs 15:23)
God can certainly speak directly to us by His Spirit; but He often uses others to tell us just what we need to hear. Thank God for friends who can give us good counsel! “Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.” (Prov. 27:9) A word in “due season” is a word that comes at just the right time; it is beautifully appropriate to the need of the hour. “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.” (Prov. 25:11)
Scripture amply tells us how destructive the tongue can be. “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” (James 3:6) But it equally tells us what a blessing our tongue can be if we will use it as a force to edify others. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Eph. 4:29) This does not mean we should become flatterers, but we should prayerfully look to God each day in order to be a benefit and blessing to others. “The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.” (Isa. 50:4)
Yes, death is in the power of the tongue, but so is life. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Prov. 18:21) A sanctified tongue is a source of incredible blessing. Recognize the power in a heart and mouth anointed by the Spirit of God. Love ministering life to others by the things you say.
