“That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.” (1 John 1:3,4)
We crave fellowship. We long to find someone who shares our interests, our passions, our preferences – someone who likes what we like. Oh to meet someone who “gets” us – who is as excited as we are about this or that. Sharing common interests makes people compatible.
The greatest fellowship that anyone can find is fellowship with God. The problem for man is he is not naturally compatible with His Creator. The natural man doesn’t receive the things of the Spirit. He’s not “into” what God is into. Loving one’s enemies? No way. Forgiving seventy times seven? Yeah right. Doing good to those who hate you? Forget about it.
Until we are born again and our spirit is joined to God’s Spirit we have nothing in common with God. But when He takes out of us that old stony heart, and puts within us His own Spirit, we are ready to walk with Him, sharing a common love for righteousness and hatred for evil. Above all, because we now have the Spirit of Christ within us, we are drawn to the path that Christ walked. We crave to be one with Him in all things.
What does it profit us if we find the person of our dreams, and have the joy of their company throughout our lives, but never enter into fellowship with the God who created us for Himself? Yes, some people find snippets of joy in this life; but fullness of joy is only found in fellowship with the Father and the Son.
Seek a deeper fellowship – discover a greater joy.
