The Key to Understanding

Michael Beck

“Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.” (Proverbs 28:5)

We are told that our hearts will live if we seek God. (Psalm 69:32) Each of our lives consist of a continuous series of choices. At any given juncture there are numerous wrong decisions that we can make, but there is only one right choice, and that is the one which has the wisdom of God behind it.

Scripture tells us that if we lack wisdom we can request it from God and He will give it to us. (James 1:5) For all who ask, receive; and all who seek, find. (Mt. 7:8) The important thing is that we ask and seek. If we don’t ask, we won’t receive; if we don’t seek, we won’t find. God will leave us to our own devices and the way which seems right to us.

Evil and unjust words and actions proceed from the failure to seek God. The wicked, through pride, will not seek after God. God is not in all their thoughts. God’s judgments are out of their sight and not in their mind. (Ps. 10:4,5) They have not because they ask not. (James 4:2) They are without understanding for one simple reason – their own failure to look for wisdom from above. Such does not have to be, but it is the lot of sheep going astray.

“Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant …” (Psalm 119:175,176)
