The Ignorance of the Proud

Michael Beck

“He is proud, knowing nothing …” (1 Timothy 6:4)

“Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!” (Ezekiel 13:3)

By nature, men walk in the same spirit Lucifer walked in. Jesus said: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” (John 8:44)

The devil is a liar, but he likes to come across as a great “knower.” He boldly declares that he sees things the way they are. But it’s all a big hoax. He knows nothing. He sees nothing. There is no truth in him. Why? Because he has no interest in submitting himself to God. He doesn’t diligently seek God’s wisdom and truth. What he speaks is “of his own” mind and will.

Likewise, men walk in the same arrogant spirit, fashioning themselves as “knowers.” They definitively state things without any basis or authority to do so. They also “follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing.”

For every thousand people who think they know, there is one who knows. That rare person is the one who refuses to speak their own mind; but only wants to be a true spokesman of God. “For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?” (Jer. 23:18)

To be pure our thoughts must pass through the filter of God’s Word. Ideas contrary to His truth need to be discarded. We dare not believe and speak anything simply because we want it to be so. Before lying to others, we deceive ourselves. But one day, we will give an account for every idle word we spoke. In this day, we may feel quite good about ourselves because our statements are believed and received by many; but in that day, God will reprove us and declare us to be liars. (Prov. 30:6)

Lucifer is deaf and blind. He has heard and seen nothing. But that doesn’t stop him from spewing lies. The day is coming when he and all his proud cohorts will be dumb and silenced. The lake of fire is the portion of “whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” (Rev. 22:15)

Avoid the desire to be a “knower.” Better to say nothing and appear to be a fool than to be thought smart while speaking lies.
