Switching Gears

Michael Beck

“… A wise man’s heart discerneth both time and judgment” (Ecclesiastes 8:5)

The wind blows where it wills. Everyone who is born of God has a call to go with the flow of God’s Spirit. The mind of God is not static. What He was willing to do in one day, He could be unwilling to do in the next.

He told Israel to go into Canaan and conquer the inhabitants. Despite the giants in the land, He would be with them. But they balked and refused to go, so He told them to turn and head into the wilderness for forty years. The next day they said they would go, but God warned them against it. The window of opportunity was now closed, and He would not be with them to defeat their foes.

Solomon recognized that “to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (Eccles. 3:1). The king had an older brother who died in infancy. His father David besought God with tears to let the child live. But there is a “time to be born, and a time to die.” As hard as it was, when the child died, David switched gears and moved on to life without the child he so wanted to live.

There is a time to embrace something, to hold on to it, to fight for it in prayer; but there is also a time to “refrain from embracing,” to let go of it and move on. We cannot afford to be stuck in yesterday’s mindset. Yesterday’s obedience may well be today’s disobedience. We cannot be unwise, we must understand what the present will of God is, and adopt the mind He wants us to now have.

Remember Lot’s wife. Don’t look back. You will turn into a pillar of salt, forever frozen in time and unable to experience the life God has for you going forward. When God switches gears, switch gears with Him. Go with His flow.
