“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
Man wants to do whatever he chooses to do without interference. He calls this power “freedom.” If something is standing in his way, that something incurs his wrath because it is not only hindering him from reaching his goal (i.e. the fulfillment of his desire,) but it is also denying him his “freedom.”
How does godliness rectify this? The godly man voluntarily surrenders this “freedom” to God. This “freedom” has been crucified with Christ. The new creature in Christ no longer lives as one “free to do whatever he wants.” He is willing to answer to God in all things. Giving God power means giving God control over your life. It means giving Him the right to stop you from doing anything if it is displeasing to Him.
Jesus Christ lived out His life as a true worshipper of the Father. He was not free to do whatever He wanted to do. He did nothing of Himself. He wore a yoke. He always did those things that pleased God. If we abide in Christ, we will walk even as He walked. We will worship God truly, and understand that true freedom is not having the ability to do what we want, but having the power to do all that God wants. No longer will we rage against those who oppose our will being done. We now live to accomplish God’s good pleasure alone. Submission to Him has become beautiful to us, as it was to Jesus. And through the Son, the Father has made the yoke of submission easy and the burden of obedience light.
