Speaking Vanity

Michael Beck

“For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” (Psalm 33:9-11)

What God decrees and declares comes to pass. He speaks no idle words. His word always prospers in the thing He sends it to. It does not come back to Him void. Not so with man.

Man swears, declares, prophesies, even in the name of the Lord, and the word he speaks is vain. God told Jeremiah the root of the problem. These false speakers were not “standing in His counsel.” (Jer. 23:18,22) They ran without being sent; they prophesied, when God had not spoken to them.

Many have learned how to manipulate God’s Word, but they don’t have the relationship with God that they should have. The amount of false words they speak bears witness to this fact. Their counsel is brought to nought; their devices are of none effect. If we would stand in God’s counsel, seeing, hearing, and marking His word, it would be a different story.
