Shut In With God

Michael Beck

“And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed” (Luke 22:41)

At times we feel the need for human company. We want to see a human face, hear a human voice. But there are other times when we need more. At such times, we need distance from man. We need a closet, a secret place, where we can see God’s face and hear His voice. Man will not do, only God.

Deep calls unto deep. The deepest cries of our heart fall in vain on human ears. Even when men understand, their help is woefully limited. We need God. We need what only He can give us. We will only find it when we draw near to Him and He draws near to us.

Withdrawing from the world of men is not a bad thing when done to draw near to God. Learn to love the secret place of the most high God.

“Shut in with God in a secret place
There in the spirit, beholding His face
Gaining new power to run in this race
Oh, I love to be shut in with God!”
