“The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.” (Proverbs 21:31)
No one who is not walking with the Lord should feel safe. The blessing of the Lord upon our life both provides for us and protects us. When we are obediently walking with the Lord we can expect His eyes upon us and His ears open to our prayers. But when we are forgetting Him, and “doing our own thing,” we should expect His face to be against us.
God forbid we pronounce blessing over those who are walking contrary to God. False prophets proclaim “Peace, peace,” where there is no peace. The whole world will be lulled into a false sense of security before they are thrust into great tribulation. “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape” (1 Thes. 5:3).
Don’t let the day dictate how safe you feel. You can be in the calmest time, but if you are not carefully walking with God, you are setting yourself up for trouble you have no ability to handle. On the other hand, you can be in the midst of the most troubling seas, but if your hand is firmly in God’s hand, He will wonderfully see you safely to shore.
Those not walking with God should be frightened, not because of the dangers they can encounter in this world, but because they are at odds with their Creator. They are careless when it comes to their most real danger, and filled with fear and worry over a thousand nothings. To those walking with the Good Shepherd, even in the valley of the shadow of death, God says: “Fear not!” The righteous ought to possess the confidence of a lion “which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any” (Prov. 30:30).
Jesus slept in the storm. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8) God gives His beloved sleep. He who keeps His people neither slumbers nor sleeps. As they walk with Him in the day, He watches over them by night. Sweet dreams.
