Reciprocal Privilege

Michael Beck

“… For thou hast discovered thyself to another than me” (Isaiah 57:8)

To worship God in spirit and truth is to intimately know and be known by God. It is to discover and be discovered. The Creator did not create man to be alienated from Him. Movement away from God began with the first man who hid himself in the garden. Sin rightfully causes shame and retreat from the sight of a holy God.

The gods of the nations have no problem with sin. In fact, they encourage the most licentious behavior. The high places where strange gods were worshipped were notorious for their debauchery. Israel danced naked before the golden calf (Exodus 32:25). “… The unjust knoweth no shame” (Zeph. 3:5).

In Christ, God gives us the privilege to draw near and intimately know Him. He also would draw near to us. His blood has removed the guilt and shame of our sin. He has called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light. Even as He gives us privileged access to His very throne, He would have us honor Him by giving Him access to all that is in our heart and mind.

What do the eyes of God desire to look upon: the heart of that person who is no longer afraid to discover themselves before His holy presence. Be bold enough to draw near to God. In Christ, He has privileged you with access to the inner workings of His heart. Reciprocate the privilege. Be bold enough to let Him search you and know every recess of your heart.

Discover me, Lord!

“… But to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” (Isaiah 66:2)
