Not Too High

Michael Beck

“Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.” (Proverbs 24:7)

God tells us that His ways are higher than our ways. The natural man cannot know these ways. Why? Because they run counter to his ideas of good. They are foolishness to him. But they that seek the Lord, in a true heart of sincerity to know Him, understand all things. The ways of God that are “past finding out” for the non-seeker, are discovered by those who would know God.

God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. The richest reward He gives to us is a knowledge of Himself and His ways. He leads us into all truth. He opens our eyes to behold wondrous things out of His Law, so He might order our steps in His Word.

There is no deeper knowledge of God gained by those who are merely content to hear His Word, and give some kind of intellectual assent to it. Revelation depends upon obedience. Doing must follow hearing.

Like Mount Everest, the Word is “there.” The wisdom it contains is “too high” for a fool to ascend to. But for those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, who want to know Him to be like Him, there is an ascent to truth that God Himself guides one into. He leads us onward and upward to where we see eye to eye with Him on a mountaintop of glory. There He unveils Himself, and speaks to us as a man speaks to his friend. There, we have fellowship with the living God, and His ways and thoughts are our ways and thoughts.

Are you up for this challenge? Give up your small ambitions. Be ambitious to know God.
