“How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death” (Psalm 13:2,3)
Situations that cause sorrow in our heart can last a long time. When day after day things remain unchanged, our plea becomes: “How long, O Lord?” But what matters most of all is where we are going with our heavy heart.
The enemy of our soul would love for us to be “moved” in the wrong direction. He would rejoice if we turned down some ungodly path to solace ourselves. When we let patience have her perfect work we take all our sorrow and grief to the Lord and let Him sit with us through it all.
Sometimes, He will say nothing – we are simply comforted by the knowledge of His presence. Other times, He will whisper a word which brings courage to our heart and hope to our darkness.
God would lighten our eyes even before we see light in our situation. He would give us a song in the night because we know that a morning of joy is on the horizon.
