Liar, Liar

Michael Beck

“For truth is fallen in the street …” (Isaiah 59:14)

We live in a day where objective truth is not nearly as relevant as subjective “truth.” What is true today for each person is their truth. What they want to believe is more important than any set of facts.

The truth can never be a secondary concern, easily dispensed with when it doesn’t fit our narrative, or serve our larger cause. The truth should never be sacrificed on the altar of our outfit. Sooner or later, the truth will come out, and the damage to whatever we were trying to save will not just injure, it will destroy.

The Lord of heaven is the God of truth. The god of this world is the father of lies. His children will “wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived” (2 Tim. 3:13). Their bald-faced dishonesty, which appears to work, only emboldens many more to play a “cat and mouse game” with those who would call them to account. Lying has become an “art,” where the only thing that matters is whether you get away with whatever you’ve done. The end justifies the means, as long as your side “wins.”

God forbid that His people should play this game. God calls us to be “valiant for the truth,” even when the truth hurts. Our organization, our cause, our ministry, or our reputation is not as important as the truth. One day we will stand before the judge of the whole earth, and give an account to Him. Be “sure that the judgment of God is according to truth …” (Rom. 2:2). All who love and make a lie will not stand in the day of judgment. They will have their part in the lake of fire. (Rev. 21:8; 22:15) Don’t get caught with your pants on fire.
