Knowing God in the Darkness

Michael Beck

“Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?” (Proverbs 20:24)

The Bible does not teach fatalism. Not everything that happens had to happen. Such a view makes God the author of countless evil events. But it is true that God is at work behind the scenes in a providential way that will require a future day for us to comprehend. Until then, we do well to acknowledge the Lord in all our ways.

Don’t try to figure it all out. There are a thousand “what if’s” concerning the past that can be just as vexing and tormenting as our fears concerning the future. We are not to lean to our own understanding concerning anything. Through so much that is now incomprehensible, the one thing that we can know is our God in a greater way. He knows the way that we take, we do not. But when we come forth we can be as gold, with a deeper trust in Him and greater character in Christ.

Bless God for His goodness. Bless Him for His wonderful ability to redeem all things and work them together for good. Live now in His peace that passes all understanding, knowing you will understand it better “by and by.”
