“Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.” (Deuteronomy 32:18)
Friendship with the world is enmity toward God. No man can serve two masters. An idol becomes an addictive obsession that makes us forget and despise all else. When we have allowed something to so captivate our eyes, and mind, and heart we develop a possessive jealousy that cannot be satisfied. Our idols will make us forget God; doting on them will be our consuming passion. But they will never be enough. They are broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Only God can satisfy our deepest desires to have and to hold. He would be our everlasting Portion, the Fountain of living waters, who is more than enough to fill our thirsting soul. He made us not for things, nor for anyone else, but for Himself – that we might find fullness of joy, and pleasures forevermore, in Him; and He might find pleasure in us. We are called to worship and serve the God who created and formed us.
Our envy towards what others have, and our jealousy that they may take away what we claim as ours, can only be cured by our loving and being loved by our Creator. We are to have no other gods before Him. We are not to love children or parents, husband or wife, more than the God who has given us all things to richly enjoy. He must be first if we are to kept from an unsound, warped version of love. Wrapped up in His jealous love for us, and His willingness to be ours for time and eternity, we will always be safe, secure, and satisfied.
Love others. Need only God. Escape eternal want.
