Greater Gain

Michael Beck

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:5)

God has made many promises in His Word. There is one we need to take special hold of: “And the idols he shall utterly abolish.” (Isaiah 2:18)

What God gives us we are to thankfully receive and enjoy. But our lives are to be without covetousness. Our affections are not to be on things of the earth, but on things above. Would we allow ourselves to be enamored by some earthly vision of delight or pleasure? Would we dream of that ideal “place in the sun?” We may indeed be allowed to find our heart’s desire. But when we are there we will discover that we have not found as “great gain” as we supposed. “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)
