Going to God

Michael Beck

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” (Psalm 62:5-8)

The way things are on the outside are not always the way they are on the inside. People see superficially; often according to what we want to make known. God though knows what’s underneath. He sees pain and struggle and emotions that we don’t let surface.

When we’re not really known, we can feel like we’re “living a lie.” But what’s the alternative? To air out all our dirty laundry for everyone to see? Becoming transparent with a trusted individual, who you know loves and cares for you, is always a good thing. But above all, if we are children of the Father, we are to go to God. He is our rock and refuge. He knows all about what we are feeling. He sees everything, without and within. In going to Him, we cast all our cares and concerns on Him. We open up to Him. We pour out our heart to Him. We believe that He knows us better than anyone else, and He does not despise or look down on us because we’re struggling or feel a certain way.

Going to God doesn’t mean everything gets immediately resolved. It doesn’t mean our feelings instantly change. It means that we have entrusted ourselves and our heart into His care and we are waiting on Him to help us feel the way He wants us to feel.

Our God can and will quiet the storm if we let Him. He can show us the way forward, not just in action, but in attitude. He wants us to depend upon Him at all times to be the difference maker. And when He is finished ordering our thoughts and our feelings, we can be grateful that the person we project outwardly IS the person we are within.
