Faithful Love

Michael Beck

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-23)

God’s faithfulness is great. His love for us is not fickle: here today, gone tomorrow. We learn how to love others by being the Lord’s beloved. He loved us when we did not love Him. He loves us at our worst, even when we’re disgusted with ourselves. He loves us even when we’ve displeased Him, denied Him, dishonored Him. His love is expressed in His faithful commitment to us.

As long as we won’t throw in the towel, our faithful God is willing to work with us. He will forgive and forget and help us get back on our feet if we have fallen. His mercies are new every morning. He will give us hope and courage that change is possible for us if we keep looking to Him, the author and finisher of our faith. His love bears all, believes all, hopes all, endures all. We may fail Him; but He will not fail us. Our love for Him may wax cold; but His love for us is steadfast and never ceases. We can leave our first love; but He is as firmly devoted to us as He has ever been.

If we have not been floored by the amazing love of God, it is doubtful that we have experienced it. His love is on a different level than we have ever known in the world of men. It would almost seem like it is “too good to be true.” But it is not something we have to fully understand – we just need to receive it. And then, wrapped in this love, we can love others in the same wonderful way.
