Face to Face

Michael Beck

“As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.” (Psalm 17:15)

The company of God changes us. The more we talk with Him and He with us, the better we become. He is the friend that sticks closer than a brother, who loves us at all times. (Prov. 18:24; 17:17) He is more than a shoulder to cry on. He is more than a friend to confide in. He is the One Person we have been created to know and love and worship. He is our Destination. When all else we have been living for, or looking toward fails us, He beckons us to come to Him and find life and love and wholeness.

How long it takes us to comes to our senses and return to His arms and table. What made us think that our life consisted in the abundance of things we possessed in this world? Why would we leave our first love for some vain far off fantasy? Oh to know that there is no other who will ever be to us what our God is! “Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.” (Psalm 73:25)

How gracious of God to accept our hand when He is our last choice – the one we turn back to after being disdained and rejected by all our other lovers. But His kindness and mercy and patience towards us make us love Him all the more. God knows who He is. He knows how much we would benefit by His presence in our life. But He will not force us to acknowledge who He is. He will not demand that we love Him. We continue to give Him our back at our own peril.

Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near. He is not far from any of us. He is waiting for us to draw near to Him, so He can draw near to us. Give God your face and behold His. As iron sharpens iron, so God sharpens the countenance of His friends.
