Escaping Delusion

Michael Beck

“Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.” (Proverbs 30:20)

A delusional state is one divorced from reality. At the root of all backsliding, or stubborn continuation in sin, is delusion. “Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return” (Jer. 8:5).

God sends to us the Spirit of truth, not to validate our “truth,” but to lead us into all His truth. Without the conviction of the Holy Spirit, change is impossible. Until we see things the way God does there is no walking with Him. “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3).

The Holy Spirit helps us look in the mirror and take responsibility for our actions. He does not allow us to excuse or minimize them; nor place the blame for our faults at the feet of someone else. We are not responsible for what others do to us, but God will hold us accountable for our response. And regardless how wronged we have been by man, we never have justification to sin against God. What has He done wrong to us?

If we cover our sins we will not prosper. We will always be moving backwards, further and further into sin. But if we confess our sins and faults before God, we have taken the first step toward real change and escape from a delusional state.
