“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)
Life, even at its best, has a melancholy shade attached to it. The things we long for, even when reached, never quite live up to their billing. “Almost” leaves us wanting.
Capturing perfection is an impossible task. The most beautiful sunrise, the best meal, the happiest day is soon a memory. We can look back wistfully on the “good old days,” but were they really that good; or just better than today in our mind?
Each day has its share of good and bad, to be enjoyed and endured; but no day is wanting nothing. There is always more we wanted to get done; more we wanted to see happen; more we wanted to experience and enjoy.
Why can’t life be as perfect as we’d like it to be? Why can’t we see with our eyes the good we envision in our minds? Why does life have to fall short of our hopes? For the simple reason that God has not created us to find our fulfillment in anything other than Himself. We are only complete in Him, nowhere else.
Beyond the horizon of this life there is so much more God has prepared for those who love Him. We groan in our spirits yearning for the more He has created us for. And until that day, when the perfect will replace the imperfect, God would have us attest that He is more than enough for us, even now, when life doesn’t quite hit the spot.
