Can Your Ears Be Itched?

Michael Beck

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3,4)

There is an underlying motive in teaching and believing false doctrine. What is taught and what is believed is something one WANTS to be true. But desire for something to be true will never make it true.

Paul told Timothy that in the last days there would be false teachers who promulgated error under the guise of scriptural truth. Instead of staying true to the whole counsel of the Word of God, he foretold that many would flock to these teachers because such teachings would accord with “their own lusts.” In other words, they would be told what they want to hear. Their ears would be itched.

This fact has been behind the rise of every heresy in the history of the church. Whether it is to calm their fears, or feed their covetousness, false teachers have manipulated scripture in order to serve people, not what they need to hear, but what they want to hear.

One day God will hold us to account for every idle word we spoke. We dare not add to or take away from His Word. It is our duty to honor Him by honoring His Word – and that means ALL of it. Don’t entertain false teaching because you so much want it to be true. Let God, and His Word be true, and let every man who speaks contrary to it, be a liar.
