“And some said, What will this babbler say?” (Acts 17:18)
Who wants to listen to a babbler? A babbler talks, but has nothing of value to say. Without ears to hear, the clearest, most pertinent truth, is thought to be foolishness. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor. 2:14).
Strangely enough, the same ears that are turned away from truth are eager to sit at the feet of those who tell them what they want to hear. Fools are counted as wise. Those who know nothing as they ought to know become popular teachers. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Tim. 4:3,4).
Would you be an oracle of God? What reception are you expecting? If the prophets and apostles of God were deemed fools and madmen, why should you think you will be well-received? Speak plain truth, and expect to be heard by those who have ears to hear. To the rest, expect to be called a babbler. Blessed are the babblers!
