Beggar’s Boast

Michael Beck

“John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.” (John 3:27)

We have what we’ve received. We receive what another has given us. If a beggar has anything should they boast in their receiving, or in the goodness of the one who gave it to them?

Give thanks to God for what you have. If others are weak and you are strong, praise God for the strength He has given you. If others are ignorant and you are wise, praise God for the wisdom He has given you. If others are without any good thing, and you possess it, praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Look down on no one. Pray for them. You would be just like them but for the grace of God. Never boast in yourself. Don’t be proud. Be humble, grateful, and merciful.

“For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?” (1 Corinthians 4:7)
