At Rest in His Refuge

Michael Beck

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” (Psalm 46:10,11)

At times we can feel so weighed down in our spirit that we don’t want to go forward. A spirit of infirmity can come upon us that would confine us to our bed. We can feel heavy because of a yesterday we wish hadn’t happened; a today we’re not looking forward to facing; and a tomorrow full of so many questions.

But the Lord doesn’t want us to be comforted by running away to the refuge of our bed or to some mind-numbing activity. He wants to be our refuge and strength. He wants us to cast all our cares upon Him knowing He cares for us. He wants us to commit our way to Him and trust He will bring His good will to pass in our lives as we walk with Him. He wants our greatest joy to be the promise of His presence though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death.

In God’s presence is fullness of joy. His joy is our strength. In the midst of any situation the Lord wants us to be still and know that He is God and He is with us.

Let all who don’t know the Most High God rage when they can’t have the world they wish for; but we who know the God of Jacob can be still, joyful, filled with hope, and courageous as we move forward in life. Why? Because our God is our strength. And this much is certain to us: He will be with us to give us all the help we need to face every challenge we must face in the moment when we need it. We will behold His works in our life and see His mighty victory in the earth. Our God reigns and He will be exalted!
