A Heart for the Work

Michael Beck

“Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?” (Proverbs 17:16)

To accomplish anything one must have a heart toward it. Success in any endeavor doesn’t come easy. No doubt there will come times when we’re discouraged. We may face obstacles outside of ourselves; or, we may wonder if we have the ability to pull something off.

When God commissions us to do something, He doesn’t look at what we bring to the table. He may choose us because we’re the least likely person to succeed. He knows more about us than we do. He knows better than we do whether we’re the right man or woman for the job.

When God has a work for us to do, before He gives us anything else, He wants to give us a
heart for it. Often, we don’t have a heart for something because we don’t believe we have the goods to succeed at it. Who wants to be a failure? But whenever God called one of His servants to a mission, and they balked because they were looking at themselves, God told them that He would be with them and would empower them for the task.

Yes, we are God’s beloved children; but we are also called to be His faithful servants. He has a place for each one of us to serve in the field of the world. He is the Lord of the harvest, and chooses where His laborers serve Him. He would give “to every man his work” (Mk. 13:34)

Make yourself available to God. Know He is looking past you and your ability to His power that works within you. When you know that you know that you know that it is Him working in you to will and do of His good pleasure, you will have the heart you need to begin and finish the work He has called you to. You will succeed because God can’t fail.
