A Brand, New Start

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions” (Psalm 51:1)

Actions cannot be undone; but they can be deleted from our memory through forgiveness. Forgiveness is a choice. When God forgives, He also forgets. “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” (Isaiah 43:25)

God’s forgives us for what we’ve done in order to change the way we are. Forgiveness provides us with the new start we need. It is near impossible to try and please someone who is angry with you. Forgiveness communicates to us that God is no longer angry with us. He has put our past behind us and Him. “… Thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.” (Isaiah 38:17)

The same God who graciously forgives us wants to help us change for the better. The future does not have to look like the past for those who are in Christ. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He instantaneously forgives our actions; He gradually changes our person – so we act more and more like Him in the days to come.

The mercy of the Lord endures forever. Look to Jesus for mercy – mercy for what you cannot change in your yesterday – mercy for what He can change in your tomorrow.
