“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” (Psalm 32:8)
Travelers have somewhere to go. A signpost has one function – to point them toward the way which will bring them to their destination.
There is a broad way that leads to death. Many are on that road. There is a narrow road that leads to life. Few find it. God has called His people to be signposts. The duty of every believer is to point men toward the narrow way God would have them get on.
1.
The WAY who is JESUS
Above all else, Jesus Himself is the Way. He pointed men to Himself. He said, “…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
Like John the Baptist, we are not to point men toward ourselves, we are to direct them to the One who is mightier than us, whose shoe’s latchet we are not worthy to unloose. If we are to honor the Father, we must honor His Son, whom He has highly exalted and made the means of His Salvation. Jesus must increase, we must decrease.
2.
The WAY of RELATIONSHIP
Men too easily slip into dead religion. They substitute sacrifice for obedience. They draw near to Him with their mouths while their hearts are far from Him. Jesus lived out as a man what an intimate relationship with God should look like. He died to bring near to God those who were afar off. God wants closeness with His creation. His concern is that we know Him. Jesus has made that possible for one and all.
3.
The WAY of WORSHIP
Jesus is both God to be worshipped and Man who worshipped. God and godliness were manifested in His flesh. (1 Tim. 3:16) Worship is more than what we do in church before we hear a sermon. The whole of Christ’s life was an act of worship. Worship involves giving God His proper due. He is worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. (Rev. 4:11) This is what the Son gave the Father while on earth, and this is what we are to give God – now and throughout all eternity.
