When the World Calls You Foolish

Michael Beck

“Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1 Corinthians 1:25)

We make choices according to what we believe is wise. There are two types of wisdom: godly and worldly. Godly wisdom belongs to those who want to worship God. The choices the godly make seem foolish to those of the world. They involve taking up crosses and laying down our life for God and others.

But the foolishness of God and those who worship Him is wiser than all the common sense wisdom of worldly people. Yes, you have saved your life, you have spared yourself pain, but what have you lost in the process? On the other side of the cross there is the resurrection. A seed that dies brings forth life. Only those who are willing to lose their lives in loving worship of God see His glory revealed through their obedience.

There are stories being written today that will endure throughout eternity. They entail heroic choices of godly men and women who did not shy away from the prospect of pain. They were not stupid people. Their eyes were wide open. They counted the cost, and they were willing to pay it. Their testimonies will shine forever as an inspiration to the righteous, and a rebuke to the wise of this world.
