When None Other Will Do

Michael Beck

“Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.” (Psalm 73:25)

God created man for intimacy with Himself. Before man was created, angelic beings were given the opportunity to fellowship with their Creator. Some angels, with Lucifer at their head, decided to live without God. This decision left them in a state of perpetual want and dissatisfaction.

No longer having God to interact with, the devil turned his attention to man. Not only did he want man, but he wanted to “sift” him away from God, deeming himself a more fulfilling partner. “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat” (Luke 22:31)

Devils are possessive. Their alienation from God causes their desperation for connection elsewhere. But they cannot be satisfied, and ultimately end up destroying those who are not enough for them.

Men have been given the same opportunity as angels were given. Will they find their deep desire for intimacy met in God; or, will they also live in perpetual want? Darkness awaits those who turn from the Light. Devils gladly offer to fulfill desires unmet by God. But even as men fail to satisfy devils, devils fail to satisfy men.

Man’s one hope is covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Oh to be His people and to know that He is our God! “My beloved is mine, and I am his” (Song of Solomon 2:16) He is the “fountain of living waters.” He is the “bread of life.” To know Him is life eternal. Only by finding fulfillment in Him will we thirst no more.

The god of this world, and all his minions, have been consigned to an eternity of want. Don’t join them in their misery. Let the Lord be your Shepherd and want no more.
