To God be the Glory

Michael Beck

“Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.” (Psalm 115:1)

God is glad to use men to accomplish His purposes in the earth. So much so that other men would worship them for their feats. “And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.” (Acts 14:11)

The more God would use us, the humbler we must be. John the Baptist is the model. He was great in the eyes of his Lord, but not great in his own sight. “… There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.” (Mark 1:7) What made John great? His humility. His unwillingness to receive men’s honor. His desire for the name of Jesus to be exalted far above his own name. “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)

There is one Name that is above every other name. To the degree we honor the Son, the Father will honor us. Let it be imprinted forever upon our hearts: “Not unto us, not unto us, but unto Jesus be all the glory!” Every crown will one day be cast at His feet. Despite how honorable, glorious, and powerful we appear in this life, we are not worthy to receive honor, glory, and power. To God be the glory, great things He has done!
