The Pursuit of Blessedness

Michael Beck

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD …” (Psalm 33:12)

People of the world may be happy from time to time, but they are not blessed. Blessedness is God given happiness. As the sun outshines a light bulb, so far does blessedness exceed mere happiness.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Blessedness is the result of letting Him guide us in all things. The world’s message is: “YOU are in charge of your own happiness.” The wisdom of the rulers of this world tells us that the “pursuit of happiness” is our God-given right. What folly to think that the God who has made us has left it up to us to find our own happiness. He has created all things for His pleasure. (Rev. 4:11) Our happiness is dependent on making Him happy. There is no divine right given to any of us to pursue happiness wherever we choose to find it.

Yes, you may find a little, temporary patch of happiness in this life, as you pursue your own path; but the “wisdom” of this world eventually comes to nought. (1 Cor. 2:6) The blessedness God promises is eternal. Reach for God’s version of happiness. Pursue blessedness. Find it by letting Him order your steps.
