“And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.” (Genesis 29:31)
There was a reason Jacob was attracted to Laban’s younger daughter. Rachel had Leah beat in the beauty department. “Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. And Jacob loved Rachel” (Genesis 29:16,17)
It is man’s way to judge after the outward appearance. Don’t be surprised that men get all excited by beauty, strength, and success. Don’t be surprised that they despise the appearance of failure and what is externally plain.
But the Lord does not see as man sees. He is not attracted to outward beauty. His favor is toward what men turn from. He chooses the weak, the foolish, and the base. He is drawn to those deemed ugly, stupid, and not cool in the eyes of men. He has special plans for the rejected, unwanted, and despised. Why? Because He can clothe them with a greater glory than nature bestows. It is through them especially that His grace and His glory have the opportunity to shine. They will always be the special object of His interest and affection.
