“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” (Ephesians 5:17)
The greatest wisdom is found in understanding the will of God for our life. Each day we are called to “hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.” (Prov. 8:33) God’s blessings upon us are intimately tied to our diligent, daily quest to hear from Him. “Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.” (Prov. 8:34.35)
There is a general will of God that pertains to every saint in every day. “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1 Thes. 5:18) “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication” (1 Thes. 4:3) But then there is a specific, personal instruction that each of us can have communicated to us. Only as we submit ourselves to God can we discover this “good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” for our life. (Rom. 12:2)
Nothing is more important than knowing what God wants of us. He would have us always walking in the mind of Christ, declaring, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” But how can we do what He wants us to do if we don’t know what it is? Oftentimes, He calls us to simply be at peace, knowing He is going to take care of us. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Pet. 5:7)
We should never compare ourselves to anyone else. What He would say to us at any given time, is not what He is saying to another. And what He is telling us today may not be what He told us yesterday, or will tell us tomorrow. The pillar of cloud dictated the movements of the children of Israel. We need to always be synced with what God is doing now. Our present obedience will lay the groundwork for all God has in mind for us.
We cannot afford to be unwise as to God’s marching orders. He has a way for us through any wilderness, if we are dining on every word that proceeds from His mouth.
