Standing in Deep Waters

Michael Beck

“Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.” (Psalm 130:1,2)

How quick and accustomed are we to cry out to God when our soul is tried? David continually called upon God to rescue his soul.

“As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” (Psalm 55:16,17)

Each of us has our own level of endurance. What is a small thing to one, another “can’t take.” We try and “hold on,” and keep ourselves from going under, but so often our outward situation doesn’t change, or may even grow worse. We need help – help in our soul, help not to act in desperation and weakness to do what we should not do. We need divine strength which will hold us up in the way we should go. For such strength we must call upon the Lord.

“Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not. I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.” (Psalm 17:5,6)

It doesn’t matter if another thinks our trial is small and we should be able to handle it. We know the weakness of our own heart. We know the sorrow and anger and fear that we feel. The waters are coming into our soul and are threatening to overwhelm us. Our soul is in deep waters.

“Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.” (Psalm 69:1,2)

Do not feel guilty because your soul is being tried. Do not upbraid yourself because you are tempted. Should you expect to be strong without Christ your Savior? Can you be a Christian without Christ? The trials you face and the temptations you feel are meant to drive you to Him. He alone stood, and if you cry out to Him, He can cause you to stand as well.
