“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8)
Sheep led astray by their own curious desires become prey to hungry beasts. The check of the Holy Spirit is meant to keep us off an evil path. We cannot afford to be naive. “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” (Prov. 22:3)
God cannot keep those who will not be watchful. Being watchful means being aware of our surrounding. Are there stumblingblocks in our path? Are there snares being laid for us? Is our enemy lurking in the weeds, waiting for his chance to devour us? God would preserve us from all evil; but we must be “wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.” (Rom. 16:19)
The god of this world is always urging us forward. “Go ahead! Be bold! Explore! Take, eat – surely you will not die!” And what does God say: “Stop! Don’t go there! Refuse that – it will damage your soul!” Who are we going to listen to? He who came so we could have life more abundantly, or he who only comes to steal, kill, and destroy?
Yes, we have a good Shepherd who will leave the ninety nine to rescue His one erring sheep; but how much better to stay safe in the fold? He can preserve us blameless if we will let Him.
