“Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:16,17)
Even good things when they are worshipped can become evil. Love, Peace, Freedom, Justice – all these are only good when they come from God. They are gifts from God; they are not God.
God Himself must be pursued before any good thing He authors. When we have Him, He will be glad to give us the true and perfect version of His good gifts. We will understand what true love is. We will find true peace and freedom. We will possess a righteousness that dwarfs men’s ideas of justice.
We can deem ourselves people of love; pursuers of peace; champions of freedom; warriors for justice – but come up woefully short in the virtue we’re signaling. To think we serve God simply because we stand for any of these things is a deception. Our version of virtue may well be vice.
Seek and find the Giver first; and all these things will be added to you.
