Perfect Submission

Michael Beck

“I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” (John 5:30)

Jesus did nothing OF Himself. He was not about self-actualization. He had the potential to do many things. He not only had the natural human capabilities that we all have, but He had supernatural power at His disposal. He had opportunities left and right to put His ability to use. But He had not come into the world to do His own will, but the will of the Father who sent Him.

The life of Jesus demonstrated what it means to worship the Lord in the beauties of holiness. He modeled submission, placing Himself and all He could do under the authority of the Father. The Light of such a life is a rebuke to all who act simply because they can and want to.

I praise God for such a Shepherd who has gone before us. He expects us to hear His voice, but He gave us an example by always hearing the voice of His Father. He expects us to honor His authority, but He gave us an example by always being under the authority of His Father. He did not simply answer to Himself – He wore a yoke and gained permission from above for the things He did.

Behold His beauty and be changed into His likeness!
