Not If, But How

“The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations …” (2 Peter 2:9)

Sometimes our back is up against the wall. Turning stones to bread was the option proposed to a desperate Jesus. Had He been ruled by a spirit of fear He might have acted on the proposal. But Jesus knew that His life depended on obedience to every word spoken by His Father. Who was telling Him to use His power to work a miracle in this situation? Certainly not the God of heaven.

Beware of desperation. The enemy of our soul is always lurking in such times to give us a solution that is not of God. Can we trust God even when our life hangs in the balance before our eyes? Will we let our own emotions rule us or will we let His Spirit show us the way forward?

If we are His beloved children, God has given us ample promises that He will supply for all our needs. “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) The issue is never whether He will or won’t provide; it is always about how He will do so. It will never be by our might or power; it will always be by His Spirit and our obedience to His leadership.

Jesus found His way out of the wilderness. He lived to complete His life’s work. Things looked “iffy” in the moment, but in the end, the Father marvelously came through for His Son. If we learn how to trust and obey as our Lord did, we will live and not die, and declare the wonderful works of our God.
